THE UNIVERSE

If the universe had a beginning, what caused it?

The universe exists. Why is there something rather than nothing, and what should we make of its extraordinary order?

Why is there something rather than nothing?

Everyday life gives us reasons to ask about causes. When we look at the universe as a whole, a bigger question appears: why does anything exist at all?

Modern cosmology describes the early universe as expanding from a very hot, dense state. What, if anything, explains that state is still a matter of scientific and philosophical discussion. The question is worth investigating rather than dismissing.

Is the universe unusually well suited to life?

Many features of physics fall within ranges that permit complex structures and life. This is often called fine-tuning. Christians may see it as consistent with deliberate creation.

Other explanations are also proposed, including deeper physical laws, selection effects and multiverse models. Fine-tuning is a serious discussion, not a mathematical shortcut that proves God. The challenge is to consider which explanation you find most convincing, and why.

What about DNA and the information in life?

DNA carries biological information used by living organisms. That extraordinary complexity naturally raises questions about origins, design and the conditions necessary for life.

Researchers study how biological complexity develops through natural mechanisms. A claim about intelligent design is a broader interpretation of the evidence, rather than something established simply by the fact that DNA contains information.

What does the Bible say?

The Bible opens by identifying God as the Creator (Genesis 1:1). Romans 1:20 teaches that creation bears witness to God’s power and nature.

These passages describe the Christian understanding of the world. The scientific and philosophical arguments are ways to examine whether that understanding fits reality.

If the universe is here, and it did not have to be, what is the best explanation for its existence?

Questions worth asking

Have I considered the strongest arguments for and against a Creator? Am I assuming the answer before investigating it? What kinds of evidence would genuinely change my mind?
